On the Block has done the challenging work of getting permits to close 11th and open a street market on a few weekends each summer since 2022.
Rain City Fit has been also doing the hard work of closing 11th and throwing an annual in-street party for their annual lifting events each summer. These events usually fill the entire block with spectators.
Capitol Hill Block Party and pride make their messes of the neighborhood by taking away public space one weekend each summer.
2017 People Streets
Due to the success of previous pilots, in Summer of 2017, ten pedestrianization events were held. The events closed down half a block of Pike and an entire block of 11th. They became a regular feature of the Pike/Pine area.
2016 Pike People Street
In 2016, with a still small window to plan the event, a pilot focused on expanding sidewalks at critical points and bringing art walk into the streets. This pilot was even more popular than in 2015 and nearly had majority support from the business community (48%). SDOT’s report (Pike People Street) again summarizes data from the three events hosted: one during a weekend in the afternoon, one during the evening overlapping with art walk, and one in the late night hours.
2015 EcoDistrict Pilot
In 2015, a community coalition formed under the Capitol Hill EcoDistrict. This group was planning for a 2016 pilot but had their timeline shortened and ended up rushing together 4 single night-only pilots in the fall of 2015. One of these pilots was cancelled due to snow. Part of these pilots was a large amount of data collection and targeted surveys. SDOT’s report (Pike St. Pedestrian Pilots Data + Recommendation Report) from the pilot says that the people attending loved it (70% in support). Many people, both community and business owners asked for this to be tried more and during the daytime as well.
